A new client access license (CAL) suite is now available through volume licensing-the Core CAL. The Core CAL includes CALs for:
- Microsoft Windows Server - Microsoft Exchange Server - Microsoft Systems Management Server - Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server
The Core CAL offers a convenient way to license basic server components across desktop computers. In addition, it reduces the overall complexity of managing CALs for server software for IT professionals.
The Core CAL replaces the BackOffice Server CAL in all Volume Licensing offerings and qualifies Enterprise Agreement customers for the platform discount just as the BackOffice Server CAL did. Whether through an Enterprise Agreement or any other volume licensing agreement, customers buying the Core CAL always buy it with Software Assurance. This way, clients are appropriately licensed regardless of the software version deployed.
Microsoft SQL Server CALs will continue to be available as an individual CAL through Open Licensing, Select Licensing, or as an additional product in Enterprise Agreements.
